PAN Card
Whether you’ve just submitted a fresh PAN application, filed a correction to fix your name or address, or requested a reprint after losing your card, the waiting period afterward doesn’t have to be a guessing game. Every one of these requests, new application, correction, or reprint, generates a unique acknowledgment or coupon number the moment you submit it, and that number is the key to checking exactly where your request stands at any time, without calling anyone or visiting an office. The tools for doing this are free, available around the clock, and don’t require you to have an account anywhere. This guide walks through how to track each type of PAN request using the Protean (formerly NSDL) portal, the UTIITSL portal, and the Income Tax e-filing portal, what the different status labels actually mean once you see them, and what to do if your application seems to be stuck or taking longer than expected.
Quick answer: how to check your PAN application status
Use the 15-digit acknowledgment number (for a Protean/NSDL application) or coupon number (for a UTIITSL application) you received when you submitted your request. For Protean, go to the status-tracking page on tin.tin.proteantech.in, select “PAN – New/Change Request” as the application type, enter your acknowledgment number, and submit; tracking is usually available starting about 24 hours after filing. For UTIITSL, go to the “Track PAN Card” tool on pan.utiitsl.com and enter your PAN number or coupon number along with your date of birth. You can also track by SMS by texting “NSDLPAN” followed by your 15-digit acknowledgment number to 57575, available from about three days after filing. If you applied through the Instant e-PAN service on the Income Tax e-filing portal, you can check status there directly using just your Aadhaar number and an OTP, without needing a separate acknowledgment number at all.
What you need before you can check status
Every PAN request type generates its own reference number at the point of submission, and you’ll need this on hand before any tracking tool will show you anything useful.
For a new PAN application or correction request
If you applied through Protean, you’ll have a 15-digit acknowledgment number shown on screen and emailed to you at submission, as covered in How to Apply for a New PAN Card and How to Update or Correct Your PAN Card Details Online. If you applied through UTIITSL, you’ll have a coupon number instead, along with the date of birth you entered on the form.
For a reprint/duplicate PAN request
A reprint request, whether filed through Protean or UTIITSL, also generates its own acknowledgment or reference number at submission, separate from any number tied to your original application. See How to Get a Duplicate PAN Card for the full reprint process if you haven’t filed the request yet.
For an Instant e-PAN application
Instant e-PAN applications through the Income Tax e-filing portal are the exception: you can check status using just your Aadhaar number and an OTP sent to your linked mobile, with no separate acknowledgment number required, since the whole process is tied directly to your Aadhaar.
How to check status on the Protean (NSDL) portal
- Go to the Protean/TIN status-tracking page (tin.tin.proteantech.in/pantan/StatusTrack.html).
- From the “Application Type” dropdown, select “PAN – New/Change Request.”
- Enter your 15-digit acknowledgment number in the field provided.
- Enter the captcha code shown on screen.
- Click submit to view your current status.
Tracking typically becomes available roughly 24 hours after you submit your application, so if you check immediately and see nothing, that’s normal — try again the next day.
How to check status on the UTIITSL portal
- Go to the UTIITSL PAN portal (pan.utiitsl.com) and click “Track PAN Card.”
- Enter your PAN number, or the application coupon number you received at submission.
- Enter your date of birth.
- Complete the captcha and submit to view your status.
How to check status via the Income Tax e-Filing portal (Instant e-PAN)
- Go to the Income Tax e-filing portal homepage (incometax.gov.in) and select “Instant e-PAN” under Quick Links.
- Choose “Check Status/Download PAN.”
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
- Verify the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- View your current status, and if it’s approved, download your e-PAN directly as a PDF from the same screen.
Checking status by SMS
If you’d rather not open a browser, you can check a Protean/NSDL application by SMS: send a text in the format “NSDLPAN” followed by a space and your 15-digit acknowledgment number (for example, NSDLPAN 012345678900000) to 57575. This method is typically available starting about three days after you submit your application, and you’ll receive a status update by return SMS.
What the different status labels mean
The exact wording can vary slightly between Protean and UTIITSL, but most PAN applications move through a broadly similar set of stages:

- Application inwarded / received – Your application has reached the department and entered the processing queue. This is the first status you’ll typically see.
- Under process – Your details and documents are being verified against the identity, address, and DOB proof (or Aadhaar e-KYC data) you submitted.
- PAN card under printing – Verification is complete, your PAN has been allotted or your correction approved, and the physical card is being printed. This stage generally appears a couple of weeks into processing.
- Dispatched – The physical card has been handed to India Post (often via Speed Post) and is on its way to the address on file; some tracking tools also show a courier tracking number at this stage.
- Application being withheld from processing – Something is incomplete or inconsistent, such as a missing document, a mismatch between your form and your proof documents, or an unclear photograph, and the department needs you to respond or resubmit before it can continue.
- Rejected / deleted – Your application couldn’t be processed as submitted, often due to duplicate PAN concerns, mismatched details, or missing mandatory information, and needs immediate attention or a fresh application.
If your status shows anything other than smooth progress toward “dispatched,” don’t ignore it, since these holds are usually resolved quickly once you know what’s missing but can sit indefinitely if left unaddressed.
How long each stage typically takes
Knowing the rough timeline helps you judge whether your application is actually delayed or just at an early, normal stage. Most applications move into “under process” within a day or two of being marked as received, since document and Aadhaar e-KYC verification tends to happen quickly once payment is confirmed. The bigger jump is usually between “under process” and “PAN card under printing,” which can take one to two weeks depending on how quickly your identity, address, and date-of-birth details are validated against your supporting documents or Aadhaar record. Once a card enters the printing stage, dispatch to India Post generally follows within a few more days, and the full journey from submission to a card arriving in your hands typically lands somewhere around 15 to 20 working days in total. Instant e-PAN applications skip almost all of this, since Aadhaar-based verification and e-PAN generation both happen automatically within the same online session.
What to do if your status is stuck or delayed
A status that hasn’t moved for a while, or one showing “withheld,” calls for a specific response rather than just waiting longer.
First, re-check the basics
Confirm you’re entering your acknowledgment or coupon number exactly as issued, with no extra spaces or transposed digits, and that you’re checking on the correct portal for how you applied (Protean applications won’t show up on a UTIITSL-only tracker and vice versa).
If the status shows “withheld” or a document issue
This almost always means a specific document or detail needs correcting or resubmitting. The acknowledgment receipt or the status page itself usually indicates what’s pending; act on it promptly, since applications left unresolved for too long can eventually be closed out and need to be refiled from scratch.
If it’s been well beyond the normal 15-to-20-working-day window
Reach out directly. For Protean/NSDL applications, contact the TIN call centre at 020-27218080 or email tininfo@nsdl.co.in. For UTIITSL applications, call 033-40802999 (available 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week) or email utiitsl.gsd@utiitsl.com. For broader PAN-related grievances, the Income Tax Department’s Aaykar Sampark Kendra can be reached toll-free at 1800-180-1961 or by email at ask@incometaxindia.gov.in. Have your acknowledgment number ready before you call or write, since it’s the first thing they’ll ask for.
If your card was dispatched but never arrived
Check whether the tracking tool provides a courier or Speed Post tracking number alongside the “dispatched” status, and use that to check delivery directly with India Post. If it genuinely appears lost in transit, contact Protean or UTIITSL to request a reprint, which is a separate, low-cost process covered in How to Get a Duplicate PAN Card.
Frequently asked questions
How soon after applying can I check my PAN status?
On the Protean/NSDL portal, status tracking usually becomes available roughly 24 hours after you submit your application. SMS-based tracking through the “NSDLPAN” text to 57575 typically works from about three days after filing. If you used the Instant e-PAN service on the Income Tax e-filing portal, you can often check status within minutes, since that process is near-instant for most eligible applicants.
What do I do if my acknowledgment number doesn’t work?
First, double-check you’ve entered all 15 digits correctly with no spaces, and that you’re using the correct tracking portal for how you applied, a Protean acknowledgment number won’t be recognized on the UTIITSL tracker, and vice versa. If you’re certain the number and portal are correct and it still doesn’t work, wait a little longer in case it hasn’t yet entered the tracking system, then contact Protean or UTIITSL customer support directly with your acknowledgment number and application date.
Can I track a PAN correction request the same way as a new application?
Yes. A correction or change request generates the same type of 15-digit acknowledgment number (Protean) or coupon number (UTIITSL) as a new PAN application, and you track it through the exact same tools, selecting “PAN – New/Change Request” as the application type on the Protean tracker. The status labels you’ll see, such as under process, under printing, and dispatched, are also the same regardless of whether you filed a new application or a correction.
What does “application being withheld from processing” mean?
This status means the department has found something incomplete or inconsistent in your application, such as a missing supporting document, mismatched details between your form and your proof documents, or an unclear photograph, and needs you to take action before it can continue. It’s not a rejection, but it also won’t resolve on its own; check the details provided on the status page or your acknowledgment receipt and respond or resubmit as instructed.
How do I check status if I applied for Instant e-PAN through Aadhaar?
Go to the Income Tax e-filing portal, select “Instant e-PAN” under Quick Links, then choose “Check Status/Download PAN.” Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and verify the OTP sent to your linked mobile number. If your e-PAN has been issued, you can download it directly as a PDF from the same screen, without needing any separate acknowledgment number.
Who do I contact if my PAN application is delayed well beyond the normal timeline?
For applications filed through Protean/NSDL, contact the TIN call centre at 020-27218080 or email tininfo@nsdl.co.in. For UTIITSL applications, call 033-40802999 or email utiitsl.gsd@utiitsl.com. For general PAN-related grievances, the Income Tax Department’s Aaykar Sampark Kendra helpline is 1800-180-1961 (toll-free), or you can email ask@incometaxindia.gov.in. Always keep your acknowledgment or coupon number ready when you reach out.
