Planted tanks have a reputation for being complicated; CO2 systems, precise lighting schedules, dosing charts, aquascaping-competition-level trimming. Most of that is for the advanced end of the hobby. My first planted tank had zero CO2 equipment, a basic light, and three plant species, and it looked genuinely good within a couple of months. You can start simple, keep it simple indefinitely if you want, and only add complexity later if a specific plant or look actually calls for it.

What follows is the setup I’d actually give a beginner, not a stripped-down summary, but the real decisions that determine whether your first planted tank thrives or slowly turns into an algae-covered cautionary tale.

Quick answer

A beginner-friendly planted tank uses easy, low-light plants (java fern, anubias, crypts, java moss, and a low-light-tolerant Amazon sword) that don’t require CO2 injection, a basic full-spectrum LED light on a timer for 6-8 hours a day, and either a nutrient-rich aquasoil or plain gravel/sand with root tabs added for heavier feeders. Notice what these plants have in common: none of them require CO2, none demand intense light, and several (java fern, anubias, moss) don’t even need substrate; they attach to hardscape and pull what they need from the water column. Plants worth avoiding as a first attempt

Carpeting plants like monte carlo and dwarf hairgrass, and demanding stems like rotala or ludwigia varieties bred for intense color, are the plants that tend to disappoint beginners; not because they’re impossible, but because they genuinely need strong light and usually CO2 to look the way they do in photos online. Buying these first, before you’ve learned to read how your specific tank behaves, is the most common way people conclude “I can’t keep plants alive” when the real issue was plant choice, not skill.

Substrate: the decision that shapes everything else

Substrate is worth more thought than most beginners give it, because it’s the one part of the tank you can’t easily change later without a full teardown. Broadly, you’re choosing between an aquasoil (a nutrient-rich, purpose-made planted-tank substrate) and an inert substrate like plain gravel or sand paired with root tabs.

Aquasoil gives new plants a genuine head start; it’s nutrient-rich out of the bag, it tends to buffer pH slightly downward and soften water a little (worth knowing if you keep fish that need harder, more alkaline water), and it has a texture root-feeding plants take to quickly. The tradeoffs are cost, a “new tank” ammonia and haze period in the first week or two as it leaches, and the fact that its nutrient charge does eventually deplete. Plain gravel or sand costs less, is chemically inert (it won’t shift your water parameters), and is easier to vacuum during maintenance, but it carries essentially no nutrients on its own; root-feeding plants like swords and crypts will need root tabs from early on rather than getting a free ride from the substrate itself. For a genuine beginner, either works. If you want the most forgiving first attempt and don’t mind the extra cost, aquasoil removes one variable (early fertilizing) from the equation. If you’re working with a tighter budget or already have gravel or sand you like, root tabs close most of the gap.

Light: enough to grow plants, not enough to grow algae

A basic full-spectrum LED aquarium light on a timer for 6-8 hours a day is enough for every plant on the list above. You don’t need to chase a specific PAR number or a particular Kelvin color temperature as a beginner; most modern “planted tank” or “full spectrum” LED fixtures sold for freshwater aquariums are built to a light output that suits low-to-medium light plants without any adjustment.

Resist the urge to run the light longer “to help plants grow faster.” More hours of light without more nutrients and CO2 to match doesn’t speed up plant growth much; plants can only photosynthesize as fast as their most limited resource allows, and light is rarely the limiting one in a low-tech tank. What extra light hours actually do is give algae, which is far less picky about nutrient balance than most aquarium plants, more time each day to grow. Hardscape and layout basics

Hardscape, driftwood, rock, or both, gives a planted tank structure and gives java fern, anubias, and moss something to attach to instead of substrate. A couple of practical notes save real trouble later. First, not all wood and rock is safe: driftwood sold specifically for aquarium use is pre-treated and won’t leach harmful compounds, while wood from outside can carry parasites, mold, or tannins in unpredictable amounts; rock is the bigger risk, since limestone and other calcium-rich rock will slowly raise your water’s hardness and pH, which is fine for hard-water fish but a problem if you’re keeping soft-water species. A vinegar test (a few drops on the rock; fizzing means calcium content) is a quick way to check before adding an unknown rock.

For layout, an asymmetric arrangement, hardscape and taller plants off to one side or in a rough triangle rather than dead-center, generally looks more natural and gives the eye somewhere to rest than a perfectly centered piece of wood. This isn’t a rule that matters for plant health, just worth knowing if you want the tank to look intentional rather than like furniture was placed at random.

Water parameters for a beginner planted tank

The plants on the beginner list are notably tolerant of a wide range of temperature, hardness, and pH; this is part of why they’re beginner-friendly in the first place. In practice, this means you should set your water parameters for the fish you plan to keep, not for the plants, and trust that java fern, anubias, crypts, moss, swords, and vallisneria will adapt to whatever falls within a normal community-tank range (roughly neutral pH, moderate hardness, standard tropical temperature). The exception is if you’re deliberately keeping soft, acidic water for something like wild-caught South American fish; in that case, avoid calcium-rich rock and hardscape, as noted above, since it will fight against the water chemistry you’re trying to maintain.

Setting it up, in order

  2. Rinse substrate if it’s gravel or sand (aquasoil generally isn’t rinsed — check your specific product’s instructions, since rinsing can wash away some of the fine nutrient particles).
  3. Add substrate and hardscape (driftwood, rock) before filling with water, and attach moss, java fern, and anubias to the hardscape now; it’s far easier to tie plants onto wood on a dry table than underwater.
  4. Plant root-feeding species (crypts, swords, vallisneria) into the substrate, spacing them with their mature size in mind rather than how sparse the tank looks on day one.
  5. Fill slowly, pouring onto a plate or into a bag placed on the substrate to avoid disturbing it, then run the filter and light on a normal cycle.
  6. Hold off on fertilizer until plants show signs of active new growth; dosing before roots are established mostly just feeds algae in a tank with no plants yet actively using nutrients.

Avoiding the algae spiral

Almost every beginner algae problem comes from the same root imbalance: more light or nutrients than the plants in the tank can actually use.   • Green spot algae (small hard green dots on glass and slow-growing leaves) often points to low CO2/carbon relative to light, or occasionally low phosphate, common on the glass of tanks with strong light and no CO2.
  • Brown/dust algae (a light brown film, common in new tanks) is frequently just a new-tank phase as silicates and the tank’s biology settle; it often clears on its own within a few weeks without intervention.
  • Black beard algae (dark tufts on leaf edges and hardscape) is one of the more stubborn types and is often tied to unstable or fluctuating CO2 levels, which is more relevant once you’ve added CO2 injection than in a true low-tech tank.

Start with a shorter photoperiod (6 hours) and increase gradually only if plants show slow growth after a few weeks. Maintenance routine for a low-tech planted tank

A low-tech planted tank doesn’t need daily attention, but a light, consistent routine keeps it from drifting toward either algae or plant decline. Weekly, a partial water change (20-30%) alongside a normal fish tank’s maintenance handles most of what the tank needs; it removes accumulated organic waste and dissolved nutrients that would otherwise build up and feed algae. Trim fast growers like java moss and vallisneria runners before they shade out slower plants or clog the filter intake; dying or yellowing leaves on swords and crypts are worth removing promptly, since decaying plant matter releases nutrients back into the water rather than storing them. Wipe algae off the front glass during water changes as routine maintenance rather than waiting until it’s visibly bad; a little algae scraped off weekly is normal and not a sign anything is wrong.

Common beginner mistakes worth avoiding

  • Buying demanding plants before easy ones. A carpet or high-color stem plant bought first, before you understand how your specific tank behaves, is the fastest route to a frustrating first experience.
  • Burying rhizome plants. Java fern and anubias planted with their rhizome (the thick horizontal stem the leaves grow from) buried in substrate will rot within weeks, they need to be attached to hardscape or have the rhizome sitting on top of substrate, not under it.
  • Fertilizing or adding CO2 before plants are established. Nutrients and carbon a plant isn’t yet using just feed algae; wait for visible new growth first.
  • Running the light too long “to help.” More hours doesn’t mean faster growth if nutrients and CO2 aren’t scaled to match; it mostly just means more hours for algae.
  • Panicking at melting crypts. New crypts often melt after transplanting and regrow from the roots within weeks; pulling a “dead” plant too early wastes a plant that would have recovered.

When to consider leveling up

Frequently asked questions

Do I need CO2 injection to start a planted tank?

My new plants are melting or turning brown; did I kill them?

Often not. Crypts especially are known for “melting” after being moved into a new tank, then regrowing from the roots within a few weeks. Leave the roots in place rather than pulling the plant, and give it time before assuming it’s dead.

Can I add fish and plants to a new tank at the same time?

Plants can go in during cycling since they don’t need the tank fish-safe yet, but fish still need the tank fully cycled first regardless of whether plants are present; plants alone don’t establish the beneficial bacteria colony that processes fish waste. Some plants do absorb a small amount of ammonia directly, which can help slightly during cycling, but it isn’t a substitute for a completed nitrogen cycle.

How long before a planted tank looks established rather than sparse?

Most low-tech setups look noticeably fuller by six to eight weeks as moss fills in and stems or runners spread, and genuinely mature by three to four months. Slow-growing plants like anubias take longer, measured in new leaves per month rather than weeks, so plant it expecting a long-term centerpiece, not a fast filler.

Can I use tap water for a planted tank?

In most cases, yes, as long as it’s dechlorinated the same way you would for a fish-only tank, chlorine and chloramine are just as harmful to biofilm and beneficial bacteria as they are to fish. Very hard or very soft tap water can influence which plants thrive best, but it doesn’t rule out planting, given how tolerant the beginner plant list is.

Do planted tanks need a bigger or different filter than a normal tank?
