It’s tempting to buy the tank and the fish on the same trip. Don’t. Everything below should be running and settled, ideally cycled, before a single fish arrives.

Décor, plants, and lighting matter for how the tank looks and for your fish’s stress levels, but none of it is what keeps the water safe. That job belongs entirely to the filter and the bacteria living in it — which is the part almost every beginner guide glosses over.

Choosing tank size and where to put it

A larger tank is easier to keep stable than a small one, because a bigger volume of water dilutes waste and resists temperature swings better than a small volume does. A 5-gallon tank can go from safe to dangerous in a single missed feeding-day mistake far faster than a 20-gallon tank can. If your space and budget allow it, start bigger than you think you need; a 20-gallon “long” footprint is a genuinely good beginner size because it gives fish more swimming room and gives you more room for error.

Placement matters more than most beginners expect:

  • Avoid direct sunlight. A windowsill tank will grow algae aggressively and swing in temperature throughout the day.
  • Avoid heat and cold sources. Radiators, air conditioning vents, and exterior walls all make it harder for a heater (or an unheated tank) to hold a stable temperature.
  • Use a level, rated stand. Water weighs roughly 8.3 lbs (3.8 kg) per gallon, so a 20-gallon tank full of water, substrate, and décor can weigh 200+ lbs (90+ kg). A bookshelf is not a stand.

Step 1: Set up the hardware, but don’t add fish yet

  1. Rinse the tank and substrate with plain water (no soap; residue is toxic to fish).
  2. Position the tank away from direct sunlight and heat sources, on a stand rated for the tank’s full water weight.
  3. Add substrate, then fill with dechlorinated water; pour over a plate or bowl placed on the substrate to avoid disturbing it.
  4. Install the filter and heater, and let everything run for 24-48 hours before doing anything else, just to confirm nothing leaks, the heater holds temperature, and the filter flow looks normal.
  5. Add any hardscape (rocks, driftwood, décor) now, rinsed but not soaped, and arrange it before you start cycling so you’re not disturbing bacteria colonies later by rearranging.
  6. Once temperature and flow look stable, move on to cycling; this is where most of your patience gets spent, and it’s worth doing properly.

A note on tap water: most tap water contains chlorine or chloramine, both of which are added deliberately to make water safe for humans to drink and both of which are toxic to fish and to the beneficial bacteria you’re about to grow. A water conditioner neutralizes these on contact; always dose it into every bucket of new water before it touches the tank, not after.

Step 2: Cycle the tank before anything else

Cycling means growing a colony of beneficial bacteria strong enough to process a tank’s waste before fish ever depend on it. Fish produce ammonia through their gills and waste, and ammonia is toxic even in small amounts; sustained exposure damages gills and skin and is a leading cause of early fish death. In an established tank, colonies of bacteria living in the filter media, substrate, and any porous surface convert that ammonia into nitrite (also toxic), then a second group of bacteria converts nitrite into nitrate, which is far less harmful and is removed through regular water changes. This two-step conversion is called the nitrogen cycle. In a brand-new tank, neither bacterial colony exists yet; they have to grow from scratch, and that takes weeks, not days.

The most fish-safe way to do this is a fishless cycle: add a small, steady source of ammonia (either a bottled pure-ammonia product with no additives, or a few fish food flakes left to decay) and test the water every few days with a liquid test kit. You’re watching for a specific pattern over several weeks:

  1. Ammonia rises after each dose, because nothing is consuming it yet.
  2. After one to two weeks, ammonia starts dropping between doses as the first bacteria colony (which converts ammonia to nitrite) establishes itself. Nitrite readings begin climbing at the same time.
  3. After another one to three weeks, nitrite starts dropping as the second bacteria colony (which converts nitrite to nitrate) establishes itself. Nitrate readings climb steadily and are only removed by water changes.
  4. The tank is fully cycled once you can dose ammonia to roughly 2-3 ppm and watch both ammonia and nitrite fall to zero within about 24 hours, consistently, across a few tests in a row.

This typically takes 4-6 weeks from a completely empty tank, sometimes faster with filter media, gravel, or an established sponge filter “seeded” from an already-healthy tank — seeding transplants a working bacteria colony instead of growing one from nothing. Step 3: Choose your first fish before you buy them

“Beginner-friendly” is not one category; it varies enormously by species, and it’s worth researching your specific choice before you’re standing at a shop with a bag in hand. A single betta, a school of tetras, a school of guppies, and a cichlid tank are four completely different setups with different tank sizes, water parameters, and temperaments, even though all four get recommended to beginners constantly.   • Schooling fish need a school. Tetras, rasboras, and similar species are stressed and often short-lived kept alone or in pairs; most need groups of six or more to feel secure.

Test ammonia and nitrite after each addition; both should stay at zero. If either rises, hold off on adding more fish and do a water change until readings return to zero.

Acclimating new fish properly matters as much as the cycle does. Fish are shipped or bagged in water that can differ significantly from your tank’s temperature and chemistry, and a sudden change is a common source of stress-related illness in the first days after purchase. The standard process:

  1. Float the sealed bag in the tank for 15-20 minutes to match temperature.

  3. Net the fish out of the bag and release it into the tank; don’t pour the bag’s water into your tank, since it can carry contaminants or parasites from the shop’s system.

Tropical freshwater fish generally need stable water between 24-27°C (75-80°F), and “stable” matters as much as the exact number; swings of even a few degrees within a day stress fish more than a slightly-off-but-consistent temperature does. A rough sizing rule is 3-5 watts per gallon, adjusted for how much colder the room gets relative to your target temperature. A fish-only tank doesn’t strictly need bright lighting; it’s mostly for your viewing enjoyment and for giving fish a normal day/night cycle, which matters for their stress levels and coloration. Ongoing maintenance, in plain terms

A cycled, well-stocked tank still needs a regular maintenance rhythm; the bacteria colony keeps ammonia and nitrite near zero, but nitrate, organic waste, and evaporation all still need your intervention on a schedule.

  • Weekly: a 10-25% water change, replacing it with dechlorinated water at a matching temperature. Vacuum debris out of the substrate at the same time with a gravel siphon.
  • Weekly or biweekly: test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH until you know your tank’s baseline is stable, you can test less often once you have a feel for it, though it’s worth testing again any time something looks off.
