Most terrarium tutorials jump straight to “add plants,” which skips the part that actually determines whether it survives, a glass container has no drainage hole, so what you put in first matters as much as what you plant on top. I’ve built enough of these now, and torn apart enough failed ones to see what went wrong inside, to know that almost every early terrarium failure traces back to the layering, not the plant choice. This is the full build process I actually use, step by step, including the parts most quick tutorials leave out: how deep each layer really needs to be, what to do differently for a narrow-necked jar versus a wide glass box, and what’s normal to see in the first week versus what means you need to intervene.

What you’ll need

- Small pebbles or gravel, for the drainage layer. Aquarium gravel, pea gravel, or LECA (lightweight expanded clay aggregate) all work; avoid anything that will leach minerals or dye into the water sitting below your soil.
- Horticultural charcoal (sometimes sold as “activated charcoal” for terrariums), to keep the enclosed environment from souring. Don’t substitute charcoal briquettes meant for grilling; they’re treated with additives you don’t want anywhere near a closed, humid container.
- A thin layer of sphagnum moss or fine mesh to keep soil from washing down into the drainage layer over time.
- Terrarium or houseplant potting mix, something well-draining, not garden soil, which is usually too dense and can carry pests or pathogens into an enclosed space.
- Your chosen plants, sized appropriately for the container, ideally still in their nursery pots so you can dry-fit the layout before committing to anything.
- Long tweezers or chopsticks, genuinely useful, not optional, for positioning plants in a narrow-necked jar where your hand won’t fit.
- A small spray bottle for misting, and a spoon or small scoop for adding soil without spilling it down the glass.
- Optional decor, a piece of driftwood, a few stones, or a small figurine, added after planting, not before.
Choosing your container before you buy anything else
Decide open versus closed before you buy a single plant, because it changes almost every layering decision that follows. An open container needs a shallower drainage layer relative to its soil since it dries out on its own between waterings; a closed one needs the drainage layer to genuinely earn its keep, because excess water has nowhere else to go once the lid is on. Step-by-step build
- Add the drainage layer. A layer of small pebbles or gravel roughly 1–2 inches deep at the bottom, deeper in a larger container and shallower in a nano jar. Since there’s no drainage hole, this layer is where excess water collects instead of sitting directly against the roots; it’s doing the job a drainage hole would do in a normal pot, just by volume instead of by escape route.
- Add a thin charcoal layer. A shallow layer, roughly a quarter-inch, of horticultural charcoal spread evenly on top of the drainage stones. It helps filter the water moving through the drainage layer and keeps the closed environment from developing a sour, swampy smell as small amounts of organic matter inevitably decompose over months.
- Add a barrier layer. A thin layer of sphagnum moss, or a cut piece of fine plastic mesh, laid over the charcoal. This stops fine soil particles from washing straight down into the drainage layer every time you water, which over a year or two would otherwise turn your clean drainage layer into compacted mud with nowhere for water to go.
- Add the soil. A layer of well-draining potting mix on top, deep enough for your plants’ root systems, typically 2–3 inches for small terrarium plants, more if you’re including anything with a deeper root ball like a small fern. Mound it slightly higher toward the back of the container if you’re building a layered, landscape-style terrarium; a flat soil line looks fine but a gentle slope reads more naturally once planted.
- Plant, working from back to front. Position taller or background plants first, then fill in with smaller ground-cover plants like moss toward the front and edges. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball, tease the roots apart gently if they’re pot-bound, and firm the soil around the base without compacting it hard. Use tweezers or chopsticks for any narrow-necked container where your hands won’t easily reach; trying to force a hand into a bottle-necked jar is how plants get bruised or the glass gets scratched.
- Water lightly and add any decor. Mist or lightly water the soil until just barely moist; you can always add more, but excess water is hard to remove from a container with no drainage hole. Add rocks, wood, or other decor now, nestling it into the soil rather than resting it directly against a plant’s stem or crown, which can trap moisture against the plant and encourage rot.
- Close it up, if it’s a closed terrarium. Put the lid on and place it somewhere with bright, indirect light, not direct sun, which will overheat a sealed glass container fast, sometimes within an hour on a sunny windowsill. Layering depths by container size
The ratios above hold roughly true across sizes, but the exact depth of each layer needs to scale with your container, not stay fixed. Here’s roughly how I split the layers by size:

When in doubt, err toward slightly more drainage layer rather than less; it’s easy to disguise a slightly thicker gravel base with moss or decor at the front, but very hard to fix a drainage layer that turns out to be too thin after everything is planted on top of it.

What to expect in the first few days
A closed terrarium should start showing light condensation on the glass within a day or two; that’s the water cycle working as intended, not a problem. Watch how the glass behaves over the first week rather than reacting to any single day, since a brand-new terrarium takes a little time to find its balance.

Common building mistakes
- Skipping the charcoal layer. It’s the easiest layer to leave out because it’s thin and easy to forget, but over months a closed terrarium without it is far more likely to develop a sour smell and murky standing water.
- Packing the soil too hard. Firm soil holds roots in place, but compacting it heavily blocks the airflow roots need and makes it harder for excess water to move down into the drainage layer where it belongs.
- Watering heavily right after planting “just to be safe.” Freshly disturbed soil looks drier than it is; a light watering is almost always enough at first, and it’s much easier to add more later than to remove it.
- Planting too densely. A terrarium planted to look “full” on day one is usually badly overcrowded within a few months, since every plant listed in the terrarium plants guide is still going to grow, however slowly.
- Sealing a closed terrarium immediately, before the layers have settled. Giving it a day or two with the lid ajar lets any excess moisture from planting escape before you commit to a full seal.

Building it is the one-time part; keeping it balanced is the ongoing part, and it’s genuinely low-effort once the terrarium settles in over the first few weeks. What’s the easiest terrarium to make as a first attempt?
A small closed jar with moss as the main plant is about as forgiving as it gets. Moss tolerates a range of light and moisture conditions, doesn’t need feeding, and the closed setup means you’re watering it rarely once it’s established. Do I need special “terrarium soil,” or will regular potting soil work?
Standard houseplant potting mix works fine for most terrarium plants, as long as it’s well-draining. Purpose-sold “terrarium soil” is usually just a pre-mixed version of the same thing, sometimes with charcoal already blended in, convenient, but not essential if you’re already building the charcoal layer separately.
How long should each layer take to build?
For a small or medium terrarium, most of the four base layers go in within about ten to fifteen minutes total. Planting takes longer than the layering itself, especially in a narrow-necked container where you’re working with tweezers, budget closer to 30–60 minutes for the full build once you include planting and adding decor.
Can I skip the drainage layer if my container is small?
No, a smaller container actually makes the drainage layer more important, not less, because there’s less soil volume to buffer a watering mistake. A nano terrarium still needs a thin drainage layer; it just needs proportionally less of it than a large one.
Do I need to sterilize the gravel, charcoal, or moss before using them?
Materials bought specifically for terrarium or aquarium use are generally ready to use as sold; a quick rinse to remove dust is usually enough. Can I build a terrarium without any drainage layer, using pot inserts instead?

Is it okay to build a reptile or bioactive enclosure using this same layering method?
